School Wellbeing Culture Evaluation

Understanding the experience of children and young people is critical in determining how and where to best apply whole school approaches to enhance wellbeing and resilience. The School Wellbeing Culture Evaluation is a valuable tool in helping schools embed an effective mental health and wellbeing strategy and demonstrate outcomes.

Our School Wellbeing Culture Evaluation was developed in partnership with the NHS as part of a school transformation project with 25 schools (primary and secondary). The evaluation measures pupil perspective in five key areas of school culture identified by the research literature as important to young people’s wellbeing and resilience; school connectedness, relationships, mental health and wellbeing awareness, dealing with challenges, and optimism.

This data provided by the School Wellbeing Culture Evaluation supports the development of organisational strategy by highlighting areas of good practice, areas for development and key starting points. The findings can be used for governance, funding applications, sharing good practice, external assessment evidence and monitoring, quality mark applications and providing feedback to parents and pupils. Follow-up surveys can be used to assesses trends and changes in school culture after any mental health or wellbeing initiatives have been introduced. Worth-it can also provide in-depth recommendations on how to effectively use evaluation data to achieve desired school outcomes.

How is this evaluation conducted?

Pupils complete the evaluation survey through an easy-to use on-line system that enables simple and flexible administration within schools. The system can be accessed from any web-enabled device, and the process of setting young people up to access the system can be tailored to meet the specific needs and constraints of individual schools.

Pupils are asked to indicate their level of agreement with question statements across the evaluation’s five sub-themes.

How does this evaluation help?

The School Wellbeing Culture Evaluation benefits schools by:

  • Giving pupils voice in how the school develops.
  • Providing insight to inform strategic approaches to enhancing whole school mental health and wellbeing specific to their school community.
  • Helping determine priorities for school improvement and development plans.
  • Identifying any gaps in provision and developing a strategic implementation plan to close these.
  • Reassuring leadership on areas of practice that are working well.
  • Pinpointing specific areas of practice that can be built on through implicit and explicit methods to improve wellbeing and mental health.
  • Providing valuable evidence for funders, sponsors, governors, Ofsted and mental health and wellbeing awards for schools.
  • Serving as a reference point for progress through future measurement.

Underpinning Evidence

The School Wellbeing Evaluation builds on research from the fields of Positive Psychology and Mental Health in Schools. In combination with Worth-it’s practical experience of supporting schools to develop effective mental health and wellbeing strategies, this evaluation was created to harness children and young people’s voice in the advance of early prevention for mental health problems in schools.

Developed and used in partnership with NHS clinical Commissioning Groups in Leicester City and Leicestershire, the evaluation was piloted with 18 schools, both primary and secondary, and has played a significant role in transforming approaches and outcomes in schools that have gone on to win awards for the mental health provision.
