What Will I Learn?

Wellbeing Toolkit Course

Module 1: Background

This module introduces you to the evidence-based approach to Positive Education approach we use to support schools and settings develop wellbeing in children and young people.

Timing and Resources

This on demand course is available to start and stop at any time you have access to the programme. It should take approximately 5 hours to complete. This course provides toolkit of over 20 downloadable resources and printable worksheets.

  • Introduction to Positive Education.

  • Why develop wellbeing at school?

  • Introduction to positive psychology, the theory and research underpinning this course.

Module 2: Coping and Resilience

This module covers coping and resilience. Developing self-awareness and understanding of different coping strategies is essential for the development of wellbeing and resilience.

Units

  • Understanding helpful and unhelpful coping strategies.

  • How to support the development of resilience in children and young people.

Module 3: Relationships

This module explores some effective strategies that combine both coaching techniques and positive psychology interventions that help develop positive relationships. This module shares complementary approaches that have been proven to build wellbeing and develop positive relationships.

  • The importance of trust and connection for children and young people’s wellbeing.

  • Listening, empathy and kindness.

  • How to develop self-compassion.

Module 4: Emotional Management

This module covers emotional management. This includes how to support children and young people to understand and manage their emotions. An important part of this is supporting children and young people to develop and experience positive emotions which is essential for wellbeing and resilience.

  • Understanding, expressing and supporting with difficult emotions.

  • How to conduct emotional check-ins for children and young people.

  • How to understand and develop positive emotions, including gratitude practice.

Module 5: Attention and Awareness

This module explores the importance of attention and awareness for developing wellbeing. The module comprises two sections; mindful awareness, and cognitive awareness.

Units

  • How to develop mindful approaches with children and young people.

  • How to develop cognitive awareness and metacognition in young people.

  • Strategies to develop thinking skills including reframing, problem solving, savouring and challenging comfort zones.

  • How to understand and develop positive emotions, including gratitude practice.

Module 6: Strengths

This module introduces you to using a language and lens of character strength and how to develop strengths awareness to support children and young people to develop wellbeing and resilience.

Units

  • Introduction to character strengths.

  • How to increase strengths awareness in children and young people.

  • How to provide strengths feedback to raise strengths awareness and increase strengths use.

  • The importance of strengths role models, and working with the ideal self when developing strengths.

Module 7: Habits and Goals

In this module we will focus on how goal setting and the development of hope theory are beneficial for developing wellbeing and resilience. We will also explore how all of the strategies and tools in the course have the potential to become wellbeing habits.

  • Introduction to hope theory and goal setting.

  • The importance of intrinsic motivation for wellbeing.

  • How to encourage children and young people to develop wellbeing habits.

Module 8: Putting it into Action

This module provides and opportunity for you to apply the SEARCH framework in your work, directly with children and young people.

Units

  • Opportunity to reflect on how you can take the strategies covered in the course and apply them to your practice.

  • Ideas of how you work with a team of colleagues to apply the SEARCH framework in your school or setting.

  • How to support the development of an embedded approach to applying the SEARCH positive education framework.
