Building Pupil Positive Mental Health and Wellbeing

This practical, thought-provoking training introduces staff to best practice approaches and builds awareness, confidence, and capacity to support children and young people to develop wellbeing and positive mental health at school. Participants explore the individual role they play in the promotion of positive mental health and wellbeing for the early prevention of mental health problems and the enhancement of learning even in challenging circumstances

Based on proven theory and resources developed within a framework of Positive Education and evidence-based tool and strategies this training enables participants to develop the wellbeing and positive mental health of children and young people. We are currently developing this course into an online programme. We are looking for schools to pilot this training programme.

What will the course cover?

During the course participants will:

  • Gain insight into how a lack of positive mental health can impact on learning and achievement.
  • Develop understanding of when poor mental health and wellbeing may be impacting on engagement at school and learning.
  • Explore coping strategies and discover ways to cultivate positive coping enabling children and young people to be resilient even in challenging and uncertain times.
  • Explore how each member of staff can contribute to the development of positive mental health and wellbeing no matter what their individual role is.
  • Define and understand aspects of wellbeing and how to develop these in children and young people.
  • Be introduced to the positive psychology approach to improving mental health. Gaining a consistent staff wide understanding of good practice that develops wellbeing and mental health..

  • Have a greater understanding of their role in improving children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing.
  • Have increased confidence and skills to effectively support children and young people in developing wellbeing and positive mental health.

This training draws upon literature and evidence from the fields of positive psychology, wellbeing and mental health in schools, covering approaches empirically proven to develop school mental health and wellbeing. The workshop supports staff to practically apply approaches developed from research and evidence. This includes how each individual can contribute to the development a school ethos that promotes wellbeing, develop resilience, protects mental health and prevents the development of mental health problems.
