Mental Health and Wellbeing Awareness Workshop

This practical, thought provoking session builds staff awareness, confidence and capacity to understand and support the mental health needs of children and young people. Exploring schools’ role in providing early prevention of mental health problems and the promotion of positive mental health and wellbeing, this workshop introduces best practice school mental health and wellbeing approaches.

Through the exploration of a proven Positive Education framework and the application of evidence-based school-wide strategies, this workshop enables participants to develop the wellbeing and positive mental health of children and young people.

What will the workshop cover?

During the workshop participants will:

  • Gain insight into prevalence of children and young people’s mental health problems and how they impact on school outcomes and achievement.
  • Develop understanding of when and how to notice a child or young person may need support for their mental health earlier.
  • Explore coping strategies and discover ways to cultivate positive coping in children and young people.
  • Explore the barriers to mental health support and identify solutions to overcome these barriers in your school.
  • Explore the barriers to mental health support and identify solutions to overcome these barriers in your school.
  • Be introduced to the positive psychology approach to improving wellbeing, gaining school wide strategies and approaches to use with children and young people.

  • Have a greater understanding of their role in improving children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing.
  • Have increased confidence and skills to effectively support children and young people in developing wellbeing and positive mental health.
  • Be able to identify good practice and reflect on how the school is already effectivity developing wellbeing.

Underpinning Evidence

This workshop draws upon literature and evidence from the fields of positive psychology and mental health in schools, covering approaches empirically proven to develop whole school mental health and wellbeing. The workshop practically applies evidence that includes how to develop a school ethos that promotes wellbeing, protects mental health and prevents the development of mental health problems.
