Creating a sense of belonging within schools is essential for fostering student wellbeing, improving engagement, and promoting overall academic success. When students feel connected to their peers and are part of a positive and inclusive school community, they are more likely to thrive both emotionally and academically. Peer-to-peer support and the cultivation of positive relationships among students play a pivotal role in achieving this. By empowering students to support one another, schools can create a culture where everyone feels valued, safe, and connected.
Research has shown that peer-led initiatives not only help students develop essential social and emotional skills but also improve their sense of belonging and reduce feelings of isolation. When students have strong, supportive relationships with their peers, they are better able to manage challenges, build resilience, and develop trust in their school environment. These connections can be particularly impactful for students struggling with mental health or experiencing transitions, as having a supportive peer network builds a sense of mutual understanding and camaraderie.
This interactive workshop, hosted by Liz Robson, CEO and Founder of Worth-it, will provide attendees with evidence-based recommendations and practical strategies for fostering belonging within their school communities. Drawing on proven frameworks like SEARCH and principles of positive education, the session will explore how to implement peer-led support structures that enhance connectedness and promote wellbeing. Attendees will gain deeper insights into the importance of peer relationships, how to nurture them effectively, and steps to overcome common barriers such as time constraints and resource allocation.
In line with government guidance, developing a strong sense of belonging is now a recommended priority for Senior Mental Health Leads—recognised as an essential foundation for student wellbeing and a whole-school mental health approach. This year’s Children’s Mental Health Week theme, ‘This is My Place’, powerfully reinforces the message: when children and young people feel they belong—in their friendships, at school, and in their wider communities—they’re empowered to thrive, contribute, and succeed. Belonging isn’t just a ‘nice to have’; it’s a basic human need, crucial for positive mental health, stronger relationships, and lifelong resilience.
This highly practical discovery workshop will show you exactly how you can turn the latest recommendations—and this inspiring national theme—into meaningful, measurable change in your school culture.
